It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Royal College of General Practitioners’ bid to host the WONCA World Conference 2022 in what is our 70th anniversary year.

GP, primary care physician, expert medical generalist: the role of the family doctor might be known by different titles around the world, but we are all united in one main aim – to deliver the best care we possibly can to our patients, wherever we practice.

It is widely recognised that if medicine is to be effective and affordable, we need to change the way in which we deliver care. This conference represents a unique opportunity for partners from across the world to debate solutions to this challenge, and how we can reshape our healthcare systems to meet the needs of patients now and into the future.

So why London? We believe there are many reasons why this iconic capital city is the ideal location to host a global conference, bringing together medical leaders from around the world.

First and foremost, it is the headquarters of the Royal College of General Practitioners, the ‘home’ of global general practice.

With our unique global connections and our strong track record in conference delivery, we will offer a unique delegate experience, combining the chance to learn about cutting edge developments worldwide and to network with leading academics and researchers, against a unique backdrop of some of the UK’s most familiar and impressive locations.

London is the place where history meets modern; where you can visit ancient seats of learning – and witness state-of-the-art, hi-tech solutions at the same time, immersing yourself in a diverse and exciting educational and cultural experience.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to London and hope that you will support our bid.

GP and Chair of RCGP Council

Helen Stokes-Lampard

The Royal College of General Practitioners is the UK’s largest Medical College, with over 52,000 members dedicated to raising standards of patient care worldwide. Our motto is Cum Scientia Caritas – Scientific Knowledge applied with Compassion.

Founded in 1952, we are the professional body that represents and supports family doctors on key issues including education, training, research and clinical standards. Since 2007, our MRCGP examination has been the compulsory licensing examination for entry to general practice in the UK. We have also developed an accreditation programme called “MRCGP[INT]” where we accredit locally available postgraduate exit assessments in family medicine and offer their successful graduates a chance to become our International Members.

We are proud to have 3,600 members living outside the UK in 100 countries as part of our RCGP ‘family’.

Our international work dates back over 60 years and we have partnerships with key stakeholders across the world.

Currently working across 20 countries, including China, the Middle East, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia, our ongoing projects provide bespoke training, capacity building, curriculum development and quality assurance and accreditation of assessments in family medicine.

Family doctors are the rising stars of global health and we have long been active and engaged members of WONCA Europe and WONCA World – indeed, the first-ever woman President of WONCA World was a member of the RCGP.

In 2022, the RCGP celebrates its 70th anniversary and there could be no better way of marking this auspicious occasion than by hosting a WONCA World conference!

14–18 September 2022

We propose to hold the 24th WONCA World Conference on 14–18 September 2022, with the World Council meeting on 11–14 September 2022. We chose those days to avoid clashing with both the UK summer holidays when many parents are away, and with the peak of the tourist season in London. Flights to and from London and accommodation in mid-September are much cheaper than during the summer months, and the weather is still mild and pleasant.

A new exhibition and conference centre on the site of London’s historic Royal Docks was proposed in 1994. Six years later, in November 2000, ExCeL London opened its doors for the first time, the catalyst for huge regeneration of this waterside quarter.

Since then, the venue has seen exponential growth in conferences and events, as a host venue for some of the best known international congresses, conventions and association meetings. ExCeL’s vision is to be the home of world leading events. ExCeL has hosted over 5000 events since the year 2000 and welcomed over 28 million people, from world leaders to Olympic heroes.

Events at ExCeL thrive on the 100-acre site, that is home to eight onsite hotels, numerous bars and restaurants, and is in close proximity to Canary Wharf, The O2 arena, London City Airport and the City of London. Every year, we bring together 4 million people from all over the world to meet, trade and exchange information and ideas.

Whatever the event, there is the perfect space for organisers at ExCeL, from large, multi-purpose event halls to state-of the-art conference facilities and smaller meeting rooms. ExCeL is home to London’s International Convention Centre (ICC London), which has a fully flexible auditorium, catering and exhibition space and a multitude of meeting rooms, from intimate boardrooms for 10 people to 1000 theatre style.

A new Metro line for ExCeL
The Elizabeth Line will stretch more than 60 miles from Reading and Heathrow in the west through central tunnels across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, directly connecting to Heathrow Airport. It will take 43 minutes from Heathrow Airport to ExCeL.
